The Difference Between North and South Indian Food

Sitara-Menu 1

As you may already know, India is a very diverse country. It’s one that’s full of different cultures, customs, languages, traditions and cuisines. No matter which direction you choose in India, you will find a new and different cuisine to follow it. However, there are still many differences that can be found between North and South Indian food.

The major differences are between the crops that can be found in both regions. For example, in North India, the staple crop is wheat. This wheat is used to make a variety of breads, including: naans, parathas, rotis and chapattis. Other crops include seasonal fruits and vegetables, and the dishes are appropriate for herbivores and carnivores alike. Tomatoes, onions, ginger and garlic often find their way into these dishes.

In South Indian dishes, rice and coconut are often the main staples. For chutneys and curries, coconut is commonly used. Rice and lentils are also used to make South India’s most popular dish: the dosa. South India’s dishes are also considered to be healthier, because they do not include rich creams or ghee. However, South Indian dishes tend to be spicier. Non-vegetarian and vegetarian options are happily found in this region as well.
